Winter and Summer Walls, Johannesburg, South Africa.
For the design of these walls I tried very much to capture a feeling of the garden that you look out onto from the verandah. Since there is such a contrast in the colours and types of plants that feature during the different seasons, I felt that it would work well to have a “winter wall” and a “summer wall”.
I also did not want the ceramic artwork on these walls to be finished to a rigid straight edge – I did not want them to appear as flat rectangular panels stuck on the wall. Therefore, for both summer and winter walls, the ceramic and mosaic pieces are attached to a metal (copper-plated) grid which was mounted about 5 – 7mm proud of the wall surface. A rectangular area of wall which reads behind the grid was tiled in a rough edged glass mosaic tile.
My intention was that by using the grid I could keep the edges of the work irregular, so that the edges are very “soft” and the ceramic bits sort of spill out of the main area of the work. I also thought that the metal grid would read as a kind of “trellis” upon which the ceramic pieces would be “growing” – or even better, especially as we used a copper grid, as a “beaded cloth” that hangs on the wall. The ceramic and mosaic pieces were attached very much like beads to the grid, and especially on the summer wall I included glass beads in the design.
For the summer (spring) wall I chose to use circular shapes – series of round elements to represent the feeling of the plants in the garden. The circular pieces are both concave and convex, the idea that in this season there is a “bursting” of growth and buds. From far the round pieces are read as a pattern of spring/ summer colours (focusing on the greens) and as one looks closer at the work patterns and shapes within the ceramic pieces, represents the summer plants.
The winter (autumn) wall is made up of long thin leaf / thorn / spike shapes. Grasses and spiky seed pods as well as the winter aloe inform this. The colours are more grey-green and “cold” greens with a small amount of ochre. The wall reads much the same as the summer wall, being a pattern of thin shapes which reveal detail patterning on closer inspection.
